Bad Ice and Pickups on Thompson?
« on: December 17, 2007, 08:43:36 PM »
I hear there are pickups on Thompson.  A friend of mine found water under the snow while driving his atv out to fish on Thompson.  He went back with the ice bar and found the ice to be around 4 inches thick. He was off the state park - it doesn't really matter since if there is bad ice near the state park there could be bad ice anywhere on the lake.  Four inches will not support a pickup.

I don't how many are driving on the ice but its not worth $20 worth of walleye fillets.

we were out in front of the silo last night and noticed thin ice under some of the heavier snow areas.  there was a full size truck that drove out.  the ice that was thinner was also weak, a little too risky for me

we drove on the road just north of the silo.  snow wasn't bad, but could be clearance problems with some vehicles.  i didn't catch/graph anything.  some buddies further out caught three dink eyes at sundown.  it won't be long and those fish will move into that area.

i also ran over a soft spot about 20 yards in diameter of slush.  i dropped down about 6 inches on my atv, did not like that at all.   i saw about 10 pickups out there, and they sure made the ice pop when they drove by.  if your gonna drive out in a pickup this early stay 300 yards away from me please.
that bad spot has made me a little leary of taking my six year old out just yet.  it was covered with snow and i could not see it.  it was about 150 yards out between swim beach and northshore bar and grill.

Yep.  I walked out pretty much straight south from the swim beach Sunday evening and encountered the same slush ... maybe a little further out tho ... maybe it runs all the way along a major fissure there? ... Made me a little nervous on foot, glad I'd left the vehicle at shore, and sent a couple prayers up for the pickups I saw scattered around the ice  ;)

Oh ... was out in about 15 ft and only snagged a couple small walleyes.  Their big brothers were elsewhere, I guess.

We noticed a bad spot with about 4 inches of water on it, right next to a crack on sunday. It was about 2o yards or so straight out from the boat ramp in the park. A few trucks drove right near it. One blue expidision drove nearly over it. It looked like someone had hit it and the ice was broken all the way through making a 2x2 hole. Im sure it froze over by now a little bit, but it is still not safe.

In the NW corner over the humps there is only 4 inches.

Safety first guys. We could all use some exercise and fresh air.

I finally made it to the big lake - Thompson.  I drilled a fair number of holes with most falling in the 12- 15 inche range but I did drill in one snow drift where there was only 8 inches.  That is not enough to safely support the pickups I see on the ice.  The eight inch spot was just 15 foot from 14 inches of ice.  I was on the south half of the lake if it matters - it doesn't to me.

And the important part - I caught a fish - about 15 inches - an 'i'.
