Mountain lion kills goats near Hartford

State game trackers were unable to locate a mountain lion that killed two goats near Hartford Thursday morning.

Arden Petersen, regional wildlife manager for the state Game, Fish and Parks Department in Sioux Falls, said today there was a confirmed lion sighting about five miles north of Hartford. The agency brought in dogs and waited overnight near the goat carcasses, but was unable to locate the cat.

The state’s policy is to kill any mountain lion that kills livestock. But high winds and rain overnight made tracking difficult.

Petersen said there was no need for residents to take extra precautions.

“There are obviously a lot fewer cats out here on the prairie or East River than in the Black Hills. And in the Black Hills, people live around and in close proximity to mountain lions and people get used to living with them.

“So I don’t want people to get overly cautious or concerned.”

Oh yeah, nothing to be concerned about as I walk to the tree stand in the morning.  I bow hunt not too far from that area. :o  I guess the GFP says not to be concerned, therefore I should be safe. ::)  It is that time of year that young males start to search out new territory and we have sitings every year in this area.  Last year a few were sited along the Big Sioux in Minnehaha and Lincoln county.  Always makes a guy wonder as he enters and leaves his stands in the dark.

I'd suggest carrying some cat treats and catnip. Oh, yeah, a a 50 caliber Desert Eagle.

It's one of the few things I've never seen in the wild. Had one around Mitchell a couple of yers ago so I drove out where it was spotted and set up the spotting scope. Never saw it at all.

Lol, one of the housekeepers here freaked out yesterday as she found an 8 inch rattlesnake in one of the sticky mouse catcher boxes yesterday morning, in one of the downstairs rooms.

There has been a few sightings of mountain lions around here in the past year as well but i dont think any of them have been confirmed. Last year there was one sighted about a mile from where i was bow hunting and i always got a little nervous walking outta the stand in the dark but i never saw it.
