Your 1st Fishing Pole
« on: March 06, 2008, 11:26:49 AM »
Just thought I'd start this thread cause it could be fun to hear about 1st fishing poles.

My first fishing pole my Dad made for me when I was a squirt.  It consisted of an antennae from a car as the rod with a broom handle that was cut off at about a foot in length.  Then he tied some black fishing line on the end.  I remember it was pretty thick and about 6 ft in length.  There was no reeling involved.  You just pulled the fish ashore.  Caught the heck out of bullheads and usually 2 at a time.  When we were done Dad wrapped the line around the antennae in a winding fashion to prevent tangles (LOL), Dad was the master at having tangle lines.  I think he spent more time taking bullheads off for me and untangling that line.  One of my favorite fishing memories with my Dad ( He passed away last year).

Mine was a cane pole , you just lifted it up as it was about 20' long.  We left them lay in the fence line and just picked them up when we went fishing for bullheads in my grandmas pasture.    They were probably only 10' or so , but when your a kid everything seems bigger.....

I thought I was hot $&#@ when I got a rod that was two pieces and had an open face reel.  Took it out, first cast, it came apart and snapped the line.  The end went flying into the lake.  All of a sudden I had half a pole.  That winter I started ice fishing...

My first pole was a 2 piece cane pole, not sure on the length but it seemed all of 20' at the time. My father was friends with the Old Home bread-man and he thought I needed a cane pole so he gave me one. I remember catching lots of bullheads with it. I upgraded to one of dads bait casters next.........that was a learning experience.......I got real good at digging out crows nests. It just got better after the next upgrade, lol.

mine was a custom made green fiberglass pole that had been cut down by my grandfather and he put an old open face reel on it with the tri-colored line.  I could hook into a catfish and it was either coming in or I was going in.  Great pole, I think all I have left is the cork handle.  haha

Cane pole. Longer than the 49 ford the adults tied the cane poles too. The cane poles were tied to the side of the car. Hit myself in the head more than once with the nut that was used as a sinker.

I'd like to find a couple of them nowdays. Fun and easy and damn near unbreakable. Northerns can really be fun on a cane pole. ;)
