This time of year it's not so much how on Thompson, but where. Didn't you say you were a shore fisherman before?

I was a shore fisherman for years and years before I got a boat. MOF I was 42 before I got my first boat.  I figured a boat was going to solve all my problems, give me access to places I couldn't get to and I'd catch more fish. Boy was that ever wrong.

Took me a couple of years to get as good at catching fish from a boat as I was at catching them from shore. Hell, I'd still rather fish from shore.

In the boat I tend to like to drift rather than troll or even anchor and work good spots hard.

Ted - From shore northerns are either active or not.  If they are active a red/white daredevil with steel leader works fine - cast at a 45 degree angle to shore.  If they are inactive a smelt rig will work - look it up on the net.  Or fish for walleyes - you will usually get more than you want.
