Mighty Mo near Chamberlain
« on: September 09, 2011, 03:55:02 AM »
I am going to try my luck tomorrow (9-10-11) and see if I limit out on walley.  I have never done a river before.  the winds show to be NW 5-10.  waves/walley chop should be light, right?  the trick is to drift for a few miles steering with bow-mount then run back up and try again?  any other advice for a novice with a 15' tri-hull, 50HP Mercury, and 56# minnkota AP

Sounds like you  have the hang of it.  The river should be relatively calm with that forcast.  If it seems a little rough trailer up to the dam.  Easier to stay out of the wind and it has been a hot bite from the stories I have been told.  Good luck!

Seems like lately going a little faster has been better.  1.0 -1.5 trolling speed if the wind isn't moving you much.  Good luck! Spinners and red owner hooks have been effective.

we hit the ramp right below Big Bend at 8:30,  started rigging up when a guy slowly motored alongside.  he informed us the action was good right across from the island at 15' starting near the second cove.  I used the electric with the merc off going 1.7 (slightly faster than current) and pulling silver spinners.  the bite stopped about 1/4 mile before the end of sheer cliff shoreline.  we made 4 passes limiting out on walleyes and also hooked 2 REAL nice white bass and 3 crappies.  12:30 we were back on dry land looking for a cleaning station.
I appologize for not having my camera with,  sorry no pics.

but I gotta tell ya.  eating Twizzlers between bites does help.

next weekend we may try Lewis and Clark near Ft. Randall.  any tips for there?  I am soo addicted to river fishing now.  don't worry though.  I will do lakes when the water temp drops.

The bite has been going on now for the last 4 weeks or so in the West Bend area.  You catch lots of fish, but you have to in order to get a limit of 15's.
