Stumper - Thanks, I stand somewhat corrected.  The 12" refers to the rim size.  My 12 rim (ATV trailer) tires measure about 20 inches and the 15 inch rim (boat) tires measure about 27 inches.  The correct rpms are 1008 for the 12" and 746 for the 15" at 60 mph.  The 12" turns 262 rpm faster or 1008/746 which equals 135% faster.  So I was a little off on the ratio.

One of my friends has a larger trailer with 15 inch tires.  Larger tires usually mean larger and heavier trailer.  I can pull my Running's 450 lb trailer a whole lot further than his 1000 lb trailer.  I have been using the 12 inch tires for 15 years for my ATV with no problems.  Save the money for something important.

I guess I have never had any problems with mine other than the trailer hopping around on the gravel roads. I used to put in alot of miles on the interstate and most of the boat trailers I seen sitting on the side of the road had 12" tires, it was not the tires that were giving out but it was the bearings. I have seen fires started and wheels come off, could be they were not taking care of them as far as keeping them greased and such, its just a personal thing for me, 13 inch tires are pretty cheap also. My boat trailer has 14" tires and have never had any problems yet, but the boat is pretty light too. I guess it depends how you are going to use them, if you are going to go over 75mph, I would not use a 12" tire for sure, just my opinion......you know what they say about opinions tho. :-\

I had 8" on my boat trailer but I also had grease zirks on each axle, so I religiously greased it immediatly after pulling itout of the water to push any grease out.  Really cmon grease is like $2.00 a tube and a tube will last all season cause 2 or three pumps is all you need.  12" tires work fine with bearing buddies so they can be greased.  but again bigger tires are better.
