Seasonal Walleye Strategies

By Chester Hastings

There are certain strategies to help find and catch trophy walleyes. One of these strategies is to fish for big walleyes at night. This is a seasonal guide to help catch the biggest walleyes.

Spring

Shallow running crankbaits that are neutrally buoyant can be cast or trolled through the shallows at night. Good spots to try at night include creek mouths, shallow rocky reefs, riprap, and rocky shorelines.

Summer

Walleyes can be found in areas of shallow water at night. Target these fish by trolling or casting large crankbaits, or by casting large softbaits on jigs. Leeches on lighted slip float rigs can entice large walleyes to be caught.

Walleyes that are suspended in open water can be located by trolling thin, long, rattling plastic-body stickbaits. Trolling crankbaits in shad patterns work well in waters that have shad as the primary forage base.

Nightcrawlers trolled on spinner harnesses with large blades is very productive in the clear waters of the Great Lakes. Depending on the depth of the fish there different ways to deliver the bait. These include, in-line sinkers, dipsy divers, lead core line, and snap weights.

Fall

Walleyes take advantage of skinny water forage in the shallows after turnover. Spring crankbait tactics and hot spots work in early to mid-fall. In late fall, walleyes and their food sources head for deeper water.

Live minnows or larger softbaits vertically fished on jigs is a good way to catch these deep walleyes. Live bait rigs with big shiners or chubs fished at steep drop-off edges can be very productive.

Conclusion

Big walleyes are most active at night, especially in clear water with high fishing pressure. Fishing these periods of higher activity will result in more big walleyes being boated. Using larger and louder crankbaits and other lures will help walleyes to find and hit your nighttime offerings.
