I can’t think of to many things that are better than watching a kid catch a fish especially if it’s the first time. A few months back I had the opportunity to take my niece fishing. She is around eight years old. We went to a fishing pier where I promised her she would catch fish. A tall order I know but this was a really good place. I even made it a point to take light tackle so any fish caught would prove to be a challenge. We baited the hook with shrimp and with the bobber set threw out the line and waited.
Before I could tell her to be ready she yells “something took my bobber”. Instinctively she pulled back on the rod which set the hook. I told her to start winding on the reel. I had to help hold the rod as this fish was going crazy. It took maybe five minutes but she reeled it in. It was a good sized Mackerel. The expression on her face was priceless. She didn’t think to much of the teeth though.
During the day she kept me busy baiting her hooks and taking off the fish that she caught. She had been here on vacation and when she returned home the first thing she told her dad was “we’re going fishing”. Now she sends me pics of every fish she catches. It’s the simple things that make life good. JR http://www.fishingstore101.info
