Bait for Ice Fishing Northern Pike

It’s almost ice fishing time and my favorite thing to fish thru the ice for are northern pike. Nothing like pulling a huge northern up thru the ice fishing hole and it just keeps coming. Big pike are easier to catch in the winter, at least for me. For a lot of people the question is to use live or dead bait? For 95% of my northern pike fishing in the winter I use dead bait. Large frozen smelt to be exact. Anyway read this article about baits for northern pike and then give them a try and see if they work for you when you’re out ice fishing.

Dead Bait or Live Bait? Ice Fishing for Pike

By Dave Selleck

Have you ever ice fished for pike? Whether you use dead bait, such as perch or smelt, or live bait such as large minnows, the method of fishing you choose will determine how you plan your trip. Ice fishing has grown by leaps and bounds through the last several decades due in part to the development of better clothing and shanties. I have fished blue gill, crappie, walleye, perch, and Pike through the ice. It’s a kind of fishing that doesn’t suit everyone, because you need to have correct clothing so you don’t get cold. You also have to choose a particular technique and the gear that goes with it because spearing, tip-ups or bobber fishing all require different gear.

Pike are the prize in ice fishing; it’s a great thrill to bring a huge pike through a relatively small hole in the ice. (There are great YouTube videos of ice fishing for monster Pike and Muskie that you might want to watch.)

Here are three things to think about when you’re trying to decide what kind of fishing you want to do and what gear you want, or don’t want to haul out onto the ice:

  • Decoy. You can stay in a shanty, watch a decoy and spear Pike through the hole in the ice. Of course that involves getting the shanty out onto the ice… a whole different conversation! Pike are curious and territorial so watching a decoy can be exciting. I remember fishing with a decoy on a sunny day in a dark shanty. I was over about 5 feet of water over sandy bottom. The view was fantastic and I could see clearly. I turned away to pour a cup of coffee and then like a stealth missile there he was, a huge Pike examining my decoy, just sitting there. I slowly grabbed my three-tinned fork and raised it up. I jabbed the spear into the water and the fish moved in a quick dodge, making my stab a worthless stab into the sand. It was fun, even in missing him, just for the excitement and memory.

How To Properly Launch and Retrieve Your Boat

Author: Mark R. Khalil

Boat launching is quite simple when you do your homework and preparation ahead of time. Don’t make your life and the life of other boaters difficult by foregoing these steps. Last thing you want to do is create a following of enemies for yourself at the lake!

Your prep work includes what you need to do before leaving home and what you need to do once you arrive at your launching site.

Before leaving home, make sure you have packed up all the necessary equipment you’ll need to make your launch a smooth one. Last thing you want is to arrive at your destination and be missing something, I would think!

Make sure you have all of your safety gear stowed away. Be sure that your bow and stern lines are secured but also easily accessible when you need them.

Once at your destination, inspect your vehicle and make sure no damage was done to your boat along the way and also inspect the launching ramp to make sure it’s suitable and safe for your vehicle.

When you’re ready to go ahead and launch, load up any equipment and personal items in the boat. Proceed to make sure to properly attach your bow and stern lines, and then remove the stern tie downs that secure the boat to the trailer.

Winterizing Marine Electronics

Author: D Harper

As the first chill of autumn hits the air and leaves are swirling off the trees, it’s time to think about heading out to the marina to make sure your boat is ready to weather the winter months. In particular you will want to protect any expensive marine electronics you have onboard. Follow these simple steps to make sure your sensitive marine gadgets spring back to life.

Step One: Make Any Needed Repairs There’s nothing worse than coming back in the springtime to uncover your boat and look forward to that first trip out on the lake only to remember that your marine electronics are not functioning or that you forgot to make needed repairs at the end of the season. Now is the time to make sure your boat is ready to go when you are. Examine all the cables and wiring for your marine electronics, make backups of waypoints or other data that is at risk of “disappearing” over the winter, walk around the boat and take stock of anything else showing signs of wear and tear or is in need of replacement.

Step Two: Remove and Store Sensitive Marine Electronics Chances are most marine electronics will do well if you wrap them properly and leave them with your boat, but if you are not sure it never hurts to remove items. Check manufacturer’s guidelines to see if electronic components are sensitive to extremely cold temperatures. If you bring your boat in off the water, it’s also a good idea to remove the battery. You should check the battery level and boost the charge in the spring time before putting it back on board.

Depending on the complexity of your marine electronics, if you decide to remove anything you will want to be confident that you can put it back – this is particularly important if you have several components wired together such as a fish finder, a marine GPS and a chart plotter.

Carp Fishing – How to Catch Big Carp

Author: J Gregory

In the UK there is a new fishing sport that is has rapidly grown in popularity over the past ten years. Fishing for carp allows anglers to take part in a sport that allows the angler to bring in large fish that may weigh up to eighty pounds each. Even beginners have been known to land a modest fifty pound carp. Lakes are stocked and the fish are fed so that they quickly reach these large sizes. Angling for carp can use several different techniques to catch the large fish. Anglers must be patient and will need to have some excellent equipment due to the weight of these fish.

Since carp are noted as fish that are shy, they are even more difficult to catch than some more aggressive fish. Even anglers who are very experienced may find that carp are a challenge to catch. The fish dwell at the bottoms of lakes and eat almost anything they can find in their home waters. Like humans who eat without restrictions on diet, carp grow to be quite large. Just by eating the scum on the bottom of the lake, a carp may grow to be the biggest fish in the neighborhood. Although they eat almost anything, carp have some favorite foods that can be used in order to draw them out of the deep holes at the bottom of the lake.

Since these fish do not tend to maintain a territory and seem to live peacefully with most other fish that they do not choose for dinner, conventional spinners or lures are not useful when carp fishing. They just move right by and keep looking for a good smelling meal. Thus the bait you choose when fishing for carp can make the difference between failure and success. Live bait sometimes work, but generally is not smelly enough to entice the carp. To solve this dilemma, anglers often use boilies. Made from fishmeal and paste, this bait has a smell that humans find disgusting but the carp finds delightful.

What Is Ice Fishing?

By Nicole Roberts

Many people who are not from colder climates may be wondering what is ice fishing? Well, it is a sport that involves trying to catch fish from a frozen body of water. This can be a risky activity if the ice is not completely frozen. It must also be thick enough to withstand the weight of the fisherman. Before you can begin ice fishing, you must first create a hole in the ice in order to have access to the water below. Most people use a saw to cut the hole.

Most people that enjoy ice fishing bring along a stool to sit by the hole they have created. They must layer their clothing and wear a large winter coat to prevent hypothermia in some locations. Others may keep warm by fishing within a cabin that has been built on the ice. These structures are known as ice shanties, fish houses, and ice huts. They are generally used on ice fishing trips that last several days. They are typically created elsewhere and then brought in with the use of a snowmobile.

Those that asked the questions, what is icefishing, should know that special equipment is needed to perform this hobby. As mentioned, a saw is needed to create a hole in the ice. An ice auger or space can also be used if a saw is not available. A strainer is also a good tool for ice fisherman. This helps to remove any new ice that may form over the hole as the fishing is occurring. The rods and reels used for ice fishing vary greatly depending on the different fish the fisherman would like to catch.

Bass and Fronts

Author: Bryant

Weather fronts can determine whether you are going to have a great day out on the lake or a miserable. Knowing what fronts cause fish to do is a very important piece of information to have before you go out on the lake.

Cold Fronts

Cold fronts mostly slow down fish activity, but a few times a year the cold fronts could be a powerful weapon. When the first cold front hits you will see a increase in feeding. Baitfish start to move up to the creek mouths as the water cools and cause bass and other game fish to school nearby. This is a very exciting time to fish and these schooling fish can be caught on just about anything. You want to use a very active bait during this time because bass are bass will be attracted to anything moving rapidly.

In winter, you want to fish before a front hits. This is the greatest chance in the winter months to have a decent outing. Fish normally feed until the front passes and become inactive for a few days. Now it’s best to wait a few days after the front passes to fish, but if you must you are going to have to change your plan of attack. Flip n’ Pitch. Get out a small jig or worm, maybe even a jig and pig, and flip and pitch into brush. After the front, bass huddle in tight in thick brush and grass and don’t come out for almost anything. And plus, because of the colder weather you want to slow your bait presentation WAY DOWN.

Warm Fronts

These can also be either a good or a bad thing. Warm fronts affect fish differently in regards to the time of year. For instance, a long warm front in the spring or winter will boost feeding activity. But a long warm front in the summer will make the fish slow down. Heat is a good thing when bass fishing, but you don’t want too much of it. If it gets too hot fish become less active. That’s why fish love warm fronts in the winter or when the temperature is rising weekly. In the summer, a warm front will really hinder your potential to catch more. sources: Http://southernfishing101.webs.com

What Are The Best Lures To Use For Fishing

Author: Heidi Kelly

The search for the best lure is a never ending journey for the fishermen and this has seen a constant evolution and revolution of fishing gear and accessories over the years. The importance of fishing to feed people and the recreational value has seen the development of various lures specifically used for different fish species. There are many types of lures in materials used, size, shape, color and weight, of which many have been developed for specific fish species, however they can work across fish species very well. Here are some of the typical lures used for fishing.

One of the most popular lures you will find in a fisherman’s tackle box is the long casting or jigging lures. These lures are very good for shallow and not so deep fishing due to their lightness but they are perfect for trout, walleye, stripers, bluefish, tuna and pike. One of the most flexible of lures for a whole range of fish is the standard light casting lure. This lure can be made of any material with the wooden lure probably being better than the others due to the way it sits in the water and the hand painting of various colors. Although it must be said that plastic lures are quite good also. Common fish caught on these lures are bonito, crappies, albacore, bass, bluefish, and oho.

Important Tips on Ice Fishing

By Cleo Gib

The first tip is to be patient. The ice will need time to become thick enough for people to walk on. It’s imperative that you know how strong the ice is; some times it’s beneficial to measure the ice. If the ice doesn’t look strong enough to walk on please walk away. The last thing you want is other fisherman fishing for you.

The second tip of the day is to bring a tent out on the ice with you. Whatever type of shelter you choose is fine but you will want some thing to shield your shadows from the fish. Early in the year the ice is thin enough that the fish can see your every move, so when you walk out onto the ice be quiet and watch your step. Once you get to the location of where you will drill your hole, use the shelter to conceal yourself. The fish can see your shadow from above the ice, being in the shelter will solve this problem for you.

The last tip is to stay put. Early in the season the ice is to thin for you to lollygagger around, the fish are very sensitive and will know that you are there.

Once you pick your location and drill your hole stay there throughout the day. It can be tempting after a few hours of no bites to retreat to another location, but you must resist. Early on in the season this can cause you more problems as the more you move the more spooked out the fish will be. Next time you go ice fishing implement these tips and watch your line tug at you as the fish bite your bait.
