What is Fly Fishing?

By Adriano Ortsaced

>Fly fishing makes use of artificial bait instead of the normal worms or other insects. This bait or ‘fly’ is made with plastic, foam. yarn and other material to form replica of one of the common insects in the area and is then tied onto the hook with a thread on spin rods. The colors are usually very bright and attractive which allows them to lure a larger scale of fish species. Classic fly fishing has become very popular and has proven quite effective compared to the traditional methods. Below are the common kinds of flies used:

* Dry flies- as the name implies, these kind of flies imitate insects that float on the surface of the water. The tricky part is making sure that the fly moves in a way that mimics the natural insect and that it doesn’t move against the current. Why? Fish are very familiar as to the movements of their food and will ignore your fly if it looks like a foreign object.

* Wet flies- these are designed to look like insects that are drowned or drowning below the surface of the water. It is also the oldest form of fly fishing known.

* Nymph flies- flies that resemble nymphs- the stage between an egg and adult in an insects life cycle.Nymph fly fishing is the most popular kind probably because it seems fish prefer to nymph for their food. The action of emerging from an egg is what a nymph fly imitates.

* Streamers and buck tail flies- these are supposed to copy the movements of small fish and are meant to lure bigger fish. The main difference between the two is that streamers are tied with feathers whereas buck tails are tied with hair. This form of fly fishing entails much more skill in the manipulation of the rod.

These aren’t the only flies used, others try to make a combination of two or three kinds.

The general rule being making sure the fly looks like food to the fish. Fish like trout and salmon are the most common fish to catch with this kind of fishing but experts are finding more ways to make the flies more appealing to a larger number of fish.

Whether in fresh or salt water, fly fishing has become one of the most common used forms of fishing due to its being both exciting and effective.

I am guessing that our planned family fishing vacation trip to the Padre Islands is on hold for the time being. Maybe fresh water fishing in Nebraska or New York would be nice instead. Picking a good spot for fly fishing is my main certain. I hear they have clean water with plenty of fish.
