Tips For Purchasing a New Fishing Reel

By William Ridgeway

The basics for selecting the right fishing reel are very, very simple. Before I do anything, I always analyze how much money I have and how much I am looking to spend. Once I know this information, I have to figure out the selection of reels that are in my rice range. To do this, I think about all of the name brand reels that I know of, and see which models are within that price range. Most companies, such as Abu Garcia and Okuma have several different models to choose from. Once I have decided on the models that I can purchase, and then I select the reel I want on the following features.

The main two features that I use to base my final selection are gear ratio and smoothness. Folks, if you are as into fishing as I am, then you will want a fishing reel with a high gear ratio. The higher the ratio, then the more line you will put on the spool per turn of the handle. This means that it will take less effort to reel in a lure faster. Its that simple.

The other aspect of a good reel that I look for is smoothness. That is, how smooth it is when I urn the handle. If you have ever had a cheap reel, then you probably know exactly what I am talking about. However, these days the technology in this department has increase so much that almost every spinning reel out there is smooth.

Closed face reels are about the only ones out there now that are likely to be un-smooth. Once I have found the smoothest reel possible with the highest gear ratio, then I am ready to go. I hope that these little tips will help all of those looking to purchase a new fishing reel.
