Journeys to lakes in the Midwest always carry a tone of excitement as the lake approaches. A little bit of evening time shore fishing is very therapeutic and a great way to spend time! When the lines are dampened, you may get some bites and you may spend a little time without any fish on the line.
For fishermen in the Midwestern area the priority is not the quantity of fish being caught in a day, rather the amount of time spent in water. If you do get a bite, you may spend a few extra hours in the day, as then you can tell what the fish want to eat and know they are looking for food. When water has a higher temperature it increases the likelihood of getting groups of fish looking for a worm or other form of bait. But essentially, that single caught fish can dictate whether the journey was worth it.
Since there are so many lakes located in the Midwest it is important for a fisherman to bring in comfort. Bringing a comfortable chair, and gear in case it rains (some of the best fishing times occur when it’s raining), and having fuel for a good fire are all excellent methods to help make the entire fishing experience more comfortable, so you can focus on not focusing, and on the chance to liberate your thoughts and to have some fun on the lake.
When the time comes to end the expedition, fishermen in the Midwest typically focus their minds for the last cast. Their self belief gets bigger with every cast during the trip and one final cast is never sufficient. When the last line is being thrown in, it may feel wrong; the line didn’t fall in the correct place or was not long enough, it didn’t cause as the last cast. The final cast could actually mean an extra 3 casts before the fishing session is actually complete.

When you look in any fishing catalog or walk into a tackle shop, you’re likely to see an enormous number of flies and it‘s easy to feel overwhelmed. Don’t. When you are starting out, it’s just necessary to realize that there are 3 major types of flies to look at. To begin, there are the lures, large flies tied to imitate small fish or simply to attract the curiosity of a fish. They are relatively heavy to cast and you generally work them back fast towards you. White, black, yellow, green, and orange are good starting colors. Lure fishing isn’t the most intelligent side of fly-fishing but it certainly works, especially when fishing stocked fish and not wild ones.
Consult a good Fly Lure Guide or talk to someone knowledgeable in fly fishing in your area for more advice on the various types of flies.
Dry fly fishing is one of the easier ways of catching fish on the fly, just because you can actually see the fish strike. A dry fly simply floats on the water’s surface and, with luck, imitates hatching flies which are one the fishes natural foods. So you tie on a fly that resembles the naturals, cast it where you see fish rising and, hopefully, they’ll be fooled into hitting it. Of course, in the realm of fishing, there will always be snags. So, how can you make your dry flyefforts just a little bit more successful?
Matching your fly
Fish can be a bit picky when it comes to taking a dry fly. Using a nymph you’re likely to get away with not being quite as accurate with your imitation. So look closely at the appearance of flies that you see on the surface and try to match those as closely .is you can from your box. Carry a selection of Adams, along with CDCs, olives, and may-flies. These don’t only hatch in May or June; you can sometimes see them later in the summer. Daddy-long-leg patterns are also a good idea in late summer and early autumn.
Floatant
Always use a floatant of one make or another to keep your fly sitting pretty on the surface. It’s better to spray or dab it on your fingers rather than on the fly itself. Then massage the floatant into the fibers of the fly.
Tippet

One of the smallest, but most significant items of your terminal tackle, fish hooks have been in a constant state of development since our Stone Age ancestors fashioned the first versions from animal bones.
These days there’s a hook pattern for every aspect of saltwater fishing, from fine wire fish hooks for delicate baits, through to forged fish hooks for big-game fishing and the improbable looking circle hook.
Hook Sizes
The smallest hook you’re likely to need for saltwater fishing is a size 12 which is no bigger than the nail on your little finger, and that would be baited with a pinch of bread flake to tempt the mullet cruising around in harbours and estuaries. The system of grading hooks according the size isn’t entirely straightforward. Starting with the size 12 mentioned above, the sizing system dictates that as the hooks get larger, the numbers get smaller and only even numbers are used – 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 to 1.
Size 1 is still a small hook by saltwater fishing standards – suitable only for the smallest flatfish and their sprat-sized brethren. But going larger from here the system changes. The next size up is a 1/0, increasing in size through 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0 to a massive 12/0 shark hook.
Selecting the right size hook to use is a matter of matching it to the size of the bait you intend to impale upon it, and the size of the fish’s mouth you hope will enclose it. Remember that whilst you can catch both big and small fish on a small hook, you can’t catch a small fish on a big hook – which might result in catching nothing at all.
