Fishing tackle for carp comes with many different rods and baits customized to different styles and levels of sport. At the heart of carp tackle is the rig used, which essentially determines how the bait is presented to the carp. Which rig to used is determined by water conditions or the behavior of the fish. If the water is heavily silted a helicopter rig might be a good option. If carp are feeding in the upper layers of the water then a zig rig might be preferable. The bread and butter of carp rigs is called the hair rig. Many anglers like this setup as it results in higher hook percentages and results in more lower lip hooks. This allows for a safe catch and release.
The third consideration is the bait. Many artificial baits are commercially available and are often used in conjunction with natural or raw particle baits. As with setting the rig, the most effective baiting methods are determined by the water conditions and the behavior of the fish. If using raw particle baits, such as wild bird seed, hemp, garbanzo or other beans be sure to soak the bait for 24-36 hours and boil for at least 30 minutes to prevent harm to the fish.
Studying carp fishing can be quite an undertaking but well worth the effort as tournament can offer huge prize money. Even fishing for sport is a challenge as carp are known as being the toughest of the fresh water fighters.
