Fresh water fishing tips and lake fishing

I have a lot of fresh water fishing tips to come in this series on freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds.

I've been fishing a fresh water lake, or at least going to the lake, since I was about 2 months old and I know I was fishing as soon as I could walk and demand my own pole. Lol, half of you won't even know what this is but it was about a 10 foot long cane pole that I was given to fish with. Lot's of adults used 15 to 20 foot cane poles for fishing back then. As much as I hate to admit it that was around 1949.

I've loved the fresh water lakes and fishing since I was a baby and would still rather spend time at the lake. My grandparents were ardent fisher people and so was my father. Some of the tips I know come from them, some I learned from pro fishermen or guides and others I learned on my own.

I like northern pike fishing best but walleye fishing runs a close second. However if the pike or walleyes aren't biting I enjoy catching crappies, perch and other panfish as well. You know how it is. Just catch what's biting and have fun with it.

I've fished in lakes, creeks, rivers, reservoirs, the atlantic and the pacific and the Gulf Of Mexico. Since as long as I can remember I made every opening fishing day in Minnesota for about 40 years until I finally missed one. Heh, South Dakota doesn't have a fishing opener and I haven't fished Minnesota since 1998. I even got fired from a job once because I was scheduled for overtime and it was also opening day of fishing. You know I went fishing. ;)

I've met quite a few of the pro's due to fishing Lake Mille Lacs in central Minnesota quite a bit. Ted Capra had a sporting goods place a few blocks from my house and I met him and his kids and shopped there frequently. Thorne brothers built me a couple of custom rods. I remember when In-Fisherman started and it was possible to call their headquarters and talk to almost anyone who worked for the magazine including Ron and Al Lindner.

I've had more than a few fishing boats from a small 12 foot aluminum to a 20 foot totally rigged out fishing boat. Aluminum, fiberglass and even wood. A couple of pleasure boats to because you do need to keep the wife happy now and then. I've even taught girlfriends who thought they'd hate fishing, to fish and to even love it. All they had to do was catch a few and they were hooked. Lol, pun intended. ;)

I've fished for years and for most everything you can think of that lives in a lake. I've even learned a few things that aren't common knowledge in that time and I'll tell you a few on them in a bit.
